Caterpillar 301.9 Electric Mini Excavator Enters Commercial Production

Caterpillar's 301.9 Electric mini excavator has moved from prototype to full commercial production in 2026, marking a significant milestone in the company's electrification roadmap for compact construction equipment.

First unveiled as a battery-electric prototype at bauma 2022 alongside the 320 medium excavator, 950 GC wheel loader, and 906 compact wheel loader, the 301.9 was the smallest machine in Cat's initial electric lineup. After several years of field testing and limited deployment through select dealer rental fleets — first reported at bauma 2025 — the machine is now rolling off production lines for customer delivery.

Specifications

The 301.9 Electric is powered by a 48-volt, 32 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, giving the 2.2-tonne machine up to eight hours of run time at typical 40–60 percent utilization. Charging is handled via a 3 kW onboard AC charger for overnight top-ups, or a 9 kW Cat DC charger for faster turnaround on site. The excavator retains the same digging performance as its diesel counterpart, with a 0.10 m³ bucket capacity and zero tail swing design suited for confined urban worksites. Market rollout

Initial deliveries are targeting customers in Europe and North America, where tightening emissions regulations on construction sites are driving demand for zero-emission compact equipment. The machine is particularly well suited for indoor demolition, basement excavation, and noise-sensitive urban projects, where the near-silent electric drivetrain eliminates the need for exhaust ventilation and reduces noise complaints. Industry impact

The 301.9 Electric demonstrates Caterpillar's broader strategy of bringing battery-electric power to the compact equipment segment first, where charging infrastructure is more manageable and duty cycles align well with battery range. Alongside the 906 Electric compact wheel loader — also entering commercial deployment — the 301.9 gives contractors a genuine zero-emission alternative for small excavator work.

Pricing and availability vary by region through authorized Cat dealers.
