
Volvo CE puts its first 50-tonne battery-electric excavator to work in Norway
Volvo Construction Equipment has begun customer testing of the first EC500 Electric pre-build machine in Norway — a 50-tonne-class excavator that can run either from an onboard battery or from a 35-metre cable reel plugged into the grid. The machine is working on quarrying, road building and tunnel projects while Volvo gathers data ahead of a commercial launch in spring 2027.
The point of the dual-power set-up is to attack the job-site power problem rather than the machine problem. The 35 m cable reel connects the excavator to a 400V grid connection, allowing it to work shift after shift without recharging. When the cable has to come off — relocating, loading, or clearing the site for blasting — an onboard high-voltage battery keeps the machine working for two to three hours, depending on application and operating conditions.
Volvo CE says the intelligent electric system is designed to adapt to various grid conditions on a 400V base, "helping customers manage the practical realities of site power availability," and reducing the demands the machine places on job-site power infrastructure.
The battery does more than cover gaps. Volvo says the system provides intelligent grid energy management and peak shaving, drawing on stored energy during high-load operations so the excavator's peak demand on the site's electrical supply stays lower. That matters where a bigger grid connection would mean a bigger investment — or where a connection of that size is not realistic at all.
Published specifications for the EC500 Electric list an operating weight of 49,006 kg, a 250 kW (335 hp) electric motor and a bucket capacity of 3.03 m³. Volvo says the machine is designed to match the conventional diesel EC500 on lifting capacity and breakout force, which is the claim the Norwegian trials are there to test.
A step up from the EC230 Electric
The EC500 Electric is a significant jump in size from the 23-tonne EC230 Electric, the battery-powered mid-size excavator Volvo has tested with customers since 2022 and planned to make commercially available in North America in 2024.
Volvo also already offers an EC500 Electric in some markets, including India, but that version is a permanently grid-tethered machine without onboard batteries, aimed at static work such as river-port material handling. The machine now in Norwegian customer hands is the first 50-tonne-class Volvo excavator that can cut the cord and keep digging.
The test programme is intended to push operator and site feedback straight into the final product. Volvo says it is collecting data on machine behaviour, performance, charging and grid connection, operator experience and practical site integration.
"This is an important milestone in the development of our electric excavator offering," the company says. "By testing the EC500 Electric pre-build machine together with customers in real applications, we are building the product around the realities of the job site."
Timeline
Sales are scheduled to start in spring 2027, with serial deliveries from the end of 2027 — more than a year away for customers outside the pilot programme. Volvo has not indicated that the electric version will replace the diesel EC500, which remains on sale in the 50-tonne class.
The launch lands in the middle of a broader push to take diesel out of heavy earthmoving. Tighter emissions rules, noise restrictions in urban areas and customer demand for cleaner work sites have moved battery power from compact machines into ever larger classes, where the energy demand is far harder to meet. Volvo's own framing of the onboard battery as a way to reduce demands on site power infrastructure points to where the real constraint sits: grid availability, not battery chemistry.
On that reading, the EC500 Electric is a test of a compromise — plug in where the site allows it, fall back on the battery where it does not. The Norwegian trials will show how well that holds up in the rock, dust and cold of real quarry and tunnel work.
