Caterpillar M320: A Wheeled Excavator Built for Lower Costs and Higher Uptime
Caterpillar has launched the Cat M320 wheel excavator, a machine engineered for construction, utility, and road maintenance work. With up to 17 percent lower maintenance costs compared to its predecessor, extended service intervals, and significant improvements to operator comfort and stability, the M320 is designed to address two things every contractor wants — lower operating costs and higher productivity.
The Cat M320 replaces the previous generation M320 (05D) and arrives at a time when wheeled excavators are gaining traction in markets where mobility between jobsites on public roads is essential. Unlike crawler excavators, wheeled machines can travel under their own power between sites, eliminating the logistics and cost of low-bed trailers. Powered by the Cat C4.4 engine, the M320 meets China Nonroad Stage IV and Brazil MAR-1 emission standards, equivalent to U.S. EPA Tier 3 and EU Stage IIIA. Its on-road travel speed of up to 35 km/h (22 mph) allows crews to move efficiently between work sites, saving both time and transport costs.
Lower maintenance, longer intervals
Caterpillar says the M320 delivers up to 17 percent lower maintenance costs versus the earlier model, a claim backed by revised service schedules and component upgrades. The hydraulic filter now runs a 2,000-hour replacement interval — a significant extension — and features anti-drain valves that keep oil clean during filter changes. Extended greasing intervals and longer component rebuild schedules further reduce lifetime downtime and keep the machine earning on site.
A standout feature is the high degree of parts and attachment commonality with the Cat 320 track excavator. For fleet operators running both track and wheeled machines, this means fewer unique spare parts to stock and greater flexibility in attachment use across the fleet. A single set of buckets, breakers, and compactors can serve both machine types, reducing capital tied up in attachments.
Operator-focused cab and controls
The cab has been redesigned with operator feedback in mind. A high-resolution touchscreen monitor provides intuitive access to machine settings and performance data. Narrow cab pillars and large windows deliver excellent all-round visibility, and an optional right-side-view camera further reduces blind spots — particularly relevant for wheeled excavators that share road space with other traffic.
A new auto axle lock engages automatically when the travel pedal is in neutral and machine speed drops near zero, simplifying the transition from road travel to jobsite work. The two-way travel pedal gives smooth, controlled movement, while the longer wheelbase compared to the previous model improves stability during digging and lifting operations. An in-cab swing lock prevents unintentional swing movement and secures the front linkage during travel, adding an extra layer of safety.
Hydraulics and efficiency
The M320's advanced hydraulic system balances power delivery with precise digging control. Auxiliary hydraulic options support a wide range of Cat attachments, sharing compatibility with the Cat 320, so operators can switch between digging buckets, hydraulic hammers, and compactors without needing machine-specific kits. Automatic Engine Speed Control helps reduce fuel consumption by letting the engine idle when the machine is not actively working — a feature that adds up across a full shift and over the machine's lifetime.
Available across multiple regions including Africa, China, the Middle East, South America, and Southeast Asia, the Cat M320 is a practical update to a well-established platform. It doesn't rewrite the rulebook for wheeled excavators, but it delivers measurable improvements where they matter most: maintenance costs, uptime, and the operator experience that drives productivity shift after shift.
