Daimler Truck has launched a dedicated global defence division at Eurosatory 2026 in Paris. With a €1 billion revenue target by 2028 and a mid-three-digit million-euro investment in engineering, production, and service, the move signals that military mobility has become a strategic priority — not a side business — for Europe's largest commercial vehicle manufacturer.

PARIS — Daimler Truck unveiled its new unified defence brand, Daimler Truck Defence, on 16 June at Eurosatory 2026, the world's leading defence and security exhibition. The division consolidates the group's global defence activities under a single identity, led by CEO Dennis Kinzelmann, and marks the most aggressive push into the military vehicle market by any commercial truck OEM in decades.

From Commercial Lines to Combat Logistics

What sets Daimler Truck Defence apart from traditional defence manufacturers is its industrial backbone. The company's Wörth am Rhein plant in Germany — one of the world's largest truck factories with a peak capacity exceeding 60,000 vehicles per year — will serve as the primary production engine, complemented by the Molsheim facility in France, which specializes in military and specialty vehicle variants.

The key insight: military variants can be integrated directly into existing commercial production lines. This gives Daimler Truck a cost and volume advantage that pure-play defence manufacturers cannot match — particularly relevant as NATO nations scramble to rebuild military stocks depleted by decades of underinvestment and accelerated by material support to Ukraine.

Contracts Already in the Books

Daimler Truck Defence is not starting from scratch. Three major contracts demonstrate existing momentum:

  • French Armed Forces: A framework agreement for 7,000 trucks based on the Zetros platform, delivered in partnership with Arquus under the PL6T programme.
  • Canadian Armed Forces: At least 1,500 logistics trucks supplied together with General Dynamics Land Systems.
  • German Bundeswehr: A three-digit-unit order for military logistics vehicles.

These programmes alone represent a substantial order book — enough to validate the €1 billion revenue target for 2028 as achievable rather than aspirational.

Portfolio and Technology Focus

The core vehicle lineup comprises the iconic Unimog, the rugged Zetros, and the heavy-duty Arocs — all available with mission-specific configurations. At Eurosatory, Daimler Truck displayed eight vehicle exhibits ranging from the Arocs 4463AK 8x8 heavy tractor unit (with a gross combination weight of up to 250 tonnes) to the Unimog U 5023 four-stretcher ambulance.

Beyond traditional platforms, Daimler Truck Defence is investing heavily in autonomous driving and unmanned systems. The GEREON unmanned ground vehicle (UGV), developed by ARX Robotics and shown at the stand, can carry up to 500 kg payload and operate autonomously — a direct response to the vulnerability of manned supply convoys exposed during the war in Ukraine.

An expanded Integrated Product Support (IPS) offering includes AI-powered spare parts identification, VR-assisted repair instructions, Li-Fi-based health and usage monitoring, and on-demand 3D printing of components. With approximately 5,000 service locations across 160 countries, the service network alone gives Daimler Truck Defence a reach few military vehicle suppliers can match.

What It Means

Daimler Truck's decision to carve out defence as a standalone division — with its own brand, CEO, and investment budget — reflects a structural shift in European defence procurement. Armies increasingly need trucks at commercial scale, with commercial reliability, backed by a global service network. The line between civilian heavy vehicle manufacturing and military mobility is blurring, and Daimler Truck intends to be the company that crosses it most effectively.
