HD Construction Equipment Partners with ROK Army for Unmanned Excavator Deployment at Military Bases

HD Construction Equipment (HDCE), a subsidiary of HD Hyundai, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Republic of Korea Army to deploy unmanned and autonomous construction equipment at military installations nationwide. The agreement was formalised on 3 July 2026 at Gyeryeongdae, the Army's headquarters in South Chungcheong Province.
The MOU was signed by HDCE President Jae-young Moon and ROK Army Logistics Chief Ha Heon-cheol, with approximately 20 senior officials from both sides in attendance.
Scope of the agreement
Under the partnership, HDCE and the Army will collaborate on applying unmanned and autonomous technologies to disaster recovery operations and the construction and reinforcement of military operational facilities. A key element is the development of an integrated remote control system capable of commanding both manned and unmanned construction machines simultaneously at military sites.
The Army will also receive specialised maintenance training from HDCE, while HDCE employees will gain security education and access to historic battlefield sites through the military.
Demographic context driving automation
South Korea's rapidly aging population and declining birth rate have led to sustained troop reductions, creating a operational gap that autonomous equipment is expected to help fill. The agreement positions unmanned machinery as a force multiplier for logistics and engineering units.
Existing commercial deployments
HDCE is not new to autonomous technology. The company already supplies unmanned autonomous excavators to major construction sites and mines in Europe. In March 2026, it launched nine new medium and large next-generation excavator models equipped with REAL-X, its latest AI-powered unmanned autonomous solution, at the CONEXPO trade show in North America.
Additional gesture
At the signing ceremony, HDCE donated 20 million won (approximately USD 14,500) to support the families of soldiers killed in the line of duty.
"This agreement is a practical form of cooperation that can help both sides grow together," Moon said at the event. "It is a great opportunity to further advance unmanned and autonomous construction machinery technology."
