Kobelco Goes Big: The SK850LC-11 Brings 85 Tons of Next-Gen Muscle to Heavy Civil and Quarry Work
Kobelco Construction Machinery USA has added serious tonnage to its -11 series with the launch of the SK850LC-11, an 85-ton conventional excavator that now sits at the top of the company's North American lineup. Weighing in at roughly 186,000 to 192,300 pounds (86,500–87,200 kg) depending on configuration, it is built for the kind of high-volume production that defines heavy civil, quarry, and mass excavation work.
The SK850LC-11 replaces and substantially upgrades the original SK850LC, which has been a staple in Kobelco's large excavator range since 2006. Nearly two decades of incremental refinement are baked into this next-generation machine.
Powertrain and Performance
At the heart of the SK850LC-11 sits a 15.68-liter Isuzu 6WG1 diesel engine delivering 512 horsepower (382 kW) and a stout 1,620 lbf·ft (2,200 N·m) of torque, compliant with Tier 4 Final emissions standards. The engine is paired with a hydraulic system that produces a bucket digging force of 90,600 lbf (403 kN) and an arm crowding force of 69,900 lbf (311 kN) — numbers that place it firmly among the most powerful excavators in its weight class.
Two variable-displacement main pumps — each rated at 133 gpm — feed the machine's pilot-controlled hydraulic system. Fuel efficiency is addressed through a boom-to-arm hydraulic regeneration system, ECO-Mode, auto idle stop, and automatic engine deceleration.
Independent Travel — A Genuine Differentiator
One of the standout engineering choices on the SK850LC-11 is the Independent Travel function. With the press of a switch, one hydraulic pump is dedicated exclusively to the travel system while the other handles implement operation — lifting, swinging, and carrying loads. This means the machine can reposition and track smoothly under load without the power bleed that plagues conventional single-pump designs when both circuits demand flow simultaneously.
Heavy Lift and Power Boost modes round out the performance suite. Notably, Power Boost has unlimited time use — it does not fade after a few seconds as on some competing machines — giving operators sustained additional force when working through the toughest material.
Operator Environment and Technology
Kobelco has focused heavily on the cab experience. The SK850LC-11 comes with a seven-way adjustable, heated air-suspension seat that moves together with the armrests and hydraulic pilot controls. The levers themselves move horizontally rather than arching, reducing wrist strain during long shifts. A 10-inch color monitor and jog dial serve as the command center, providing access to all machine settings, attachment flow-rate adjustments, maintenance intervals, and fuel data.
The standard three-camera system delivers a 270-degree view around the machine on that same monitor — essential for safety in congested quarry and jobsite environments. Six front and four rear LED work lights, rear swing flashers, and a heavy-duty Level II FOPS cab guard (which opens for cleaning) round out the safety package.
On the telematics side, Kobelco's KOMEXS platform comes standard, along with the K-LOAD onboard weighing system, giving fleet managers real-time visibility into production and machine health without leaving the office.
Durability Built In
The undercarriage is retractable, with three track guides, belly guards, a swivel guard, and folding catwalks for service access. A reversible cooling fan with removable clean-out screens helps keep critical systems running in dusty environments — a real-world consideration that matters more on paper than in a brochure.
Market Position and Availability
The SK850LC-11 enters a competitive 85-ton segment, going head-to-head with established heavyweights from Caterpillar, Komatsu, Liebherr, and Hitachi. Kobelco's strategy leans on the combination of Independent Travel, unlimited Power Boost, and the four-year / 4,000-hour limited full-machine warranty — a coverage period that signals confidence in long-term reliability.
The machine was shown at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2026 and is available for order through Kobelco's North American dealer network. With the original SK850LC lineage stretching back to 2006 and decades of excavator production since 1930, the SK850LC-11 represents a mature platform that has earned its place in the big leagues.
