Liebherr Debuts Generation 8 Material Handlers at IFAT 2026 — Conventional and Electric Prototypes
Liebherr used IFAT 2026 in Munich as the launchpad for its new Generation 8 material handler platform, unveiling two prototypes that signal a clear direction for the recycling and waste management sector: higher handling performance still matters, but operator comfort, digital control, and powertrain flexibility are now core design priorities.
The two machines shown — the conventionally powered LH 18 M Industry and the electrically powered LH 22 M Industry E — are purpose-built for demanding waste management, recycling, and industrial handling applications. Both are designed to deliver long reach, high lifting capacity, and fast cycle times over extended shifts, with the electric variant representing Liebherr's push toward zero-emission operations in sensitive urban and indoor environments.
emCAB: More Glass, Better Visibility
A centrepiece of the Generation 8 update is the new Liebherr emCAB. The cab features 15% more glass surface area than its predecessor, giving operators a substantially wider view of the work area — a critical safety and efficiency factor in waste yards and transfer stations where personnel, trucks, and stockpiles are in constant motion.
A fully glazed cab floor comes as standard, allowing the operator to see directly down to attachments, containers, and the ground around the machine. Liebherr has also increased legroom and headroom, upgraded the seat, and introduced individually adjustable control elements with electro-hydraulic settings that can be tailored to operator preferences.
A sliding cab door, also standard on the Gen 8 machines, improves entry and exit in tight spaces.
INTUSI: Smartphone-Style Machine Control
Inside the emCAB, the new INTUSI intuitive user interface rethinks how operators interact with the machine. Inspired by smartphone interface logic, INTUSI organises machine functions into configurable widgets that operators can arrange thematically or contextually. The system supports customisable function mapping, personal user profiles with saved settings, and direct access to priority functions.
The aim is to reduce familiarisation time across operators and simplify the management of increasingly complex machine electronics — a growing concern as material handlers gain more digital features.
Performance and Safety Upgrades
Under the skin, the Generation 8 platform brings meaningful mechanical and safety improvements. An electric servo control system integrated into the uppercarriage replaces traditional hydraulic pilot controls, allowing operators to fine-tune machine response to their preferred operating style. The system also enables end-of-travel damping, improving control during repetitive cycles.
Pipe-burst protection on both lift and stick cylinders is fitted as standard, providing a critical safety layer in load-handling operations where sudden hydraulic failure could be dangerous. Liebherr has also improved the kinematics and structural robustness of the platform to handle higher material throughput, and service access has been reorganised to reduce downtime during routine maintenance.
Strategic Positioning
The Generation 8 launch marks more than a product refresh. By showing both conventional and electric variants at the same show, Liebherr is making a technology-neutral argument: the right drivetrain depends on the application. The LH 18 M Industry will continue to serve sites with established diesel infrastructure, while the LH 22 M Industry E targets operations pushing toward electrification — indoor recycling facilities, transfer stations with emission regulations, and municipal waste operations with green procurement requirements.
With IFAT 2026 establishing itself as a key venue for heavy equipment launches in the environmental technology space, Liebherr's Gen 8 material handlers demonstrate that the recycling and waste sector is now a primary driver of innovation in mobile machinery, not just an aftermarket segment.
