
Overland AI Wins $20M Production Contract for Autonomous Ground Vehicles with US Marine Corps
In a milestone for military ground autonomy, Seattle-based Overland AI has secured a $20 million production contract from the US Marine Corps, becoming the first ground autonomy company to prime a production contract for the US Department of Defense.
The contract, awarded through the APFIT (Accelerated Production and Fielding of Innovative Technologies) program and backed by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, will accelerate the production and deployment of fully autonomous ground vehicles integrated with the Marine Air Defense Integrated System (MADIS).
Autonomous Supply Vehicles for Air Defense
The autonomous platforms will serve as supply and support vehicles within the MADIS ecosystem — not as direct replacements for crewed tactical vehicles like the JLTV. Instead, they are designed to provide enhanced logistics capability, ferrying supplies, ammunition, and equipment to support the air defense system's forward-deployed elements.
"We are pairing autonomous platforms with MADIS because it will greatly extend operational reach and lethality in anti-air warfare missions," said Joe Klocek, Program Manager for the effort. The concept envisions a mixed fleet where crewed air defense vehicles are backed by unmanned supply platforms that can operate in contested environments without putting additional personnel at risk.
A Breakthrough for Ground Autonomy
What makes this contract noteworthy is its structure. Overland AI is the prime contractor — a first for a ground autonomy company in the US military acquisition system. Previous unmanned ground systems have largely been delivered as subcomponents of larger programs or as tele-operated add-ons, with a human operator maintaining direct control via remote.
This contract shifts the paradigm toward fully autonomous operation, where vehicles navigate, follow, and reposition without continuous human input. The shift reflects growing confidence within the Pentagon that ground autonomy technology has matured enough to move beyond demonstrations and into production.

Building on the ROGUE Fires Platform
The contract builds on Overland AI's existing work with Program Manager Ground Weapons Systems, including their involvement with the ROGUE Fires platform — a semi-autonomous launcher that has demonstrated long-range precision fires capability. The technology developed for ROGUE Fires, including autonomous navigation, obstacle avoidance, and convoy operations, serves as the foundation for the MADIS integration.
Overland AI, headquartered in Seattle, Washington, has established itself as a leading developer of off-road autonomous navigation software for defense applications. Their systems are designed to operate in GPS-denied environments and complex terrain — conditions that are particularly relevant to the Marine Corps' distributed operations concept.
Industry Implications
The contract marks a turning point for the defense autonomy sector. While aerial drones have been a fixture of modern warfare for two decades, ground autonomy has lagged behind, constrained by more complex navigation challenges and a more conservative acquisition approach.
