Rheinmetall has landed its first international export contract for the Skynex very short-range air defence (VSHORAD) system, in a deal valued in the region of several hundred million euros. The contract, booked in the second quarter of 2026, covers the delivery of four complete Skynex systems to an undisclosed international customer.

The order marks a commercial breakthrough for the gun-based air defence system, which Rheinmetall has been marketing as a modular, open-architecture solution for countering drones, rockets, artillery, and mortar threats. The company confirmed the customer is a first-time buyer of the system, expanding the technology's international user base.

Contract Scope and Timeline

The agreement spans 39 months from contract signature to final delivery. The first Skynex battery is scheduled to be handed over 21 months after signing, with subsequent batteries following at six-month intervals. This phased delivery profile suggests the customer intends to achieve initial operational capability with the first battery well ahead of full system fielding.

Each system includes trucks, ammunition, and a comprehensive Integrated Logistic Support (ILS) package covering specialist training, spare parts, tooling, and consumables. Rheinmetall states that the ILS package is fully included in the total contract value, meaning the customer avoids additional procurement burdens for sustainment.

Industrial Organisation

Rheinmetall Italia is acting as the prime contractor for the programme, coordinating delivery across several group subsidiaries. Rheinmetall Air Defence (formerly Oerlikon) supplies the core weapon and sensor systems, Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles provides the truck platforms for the mobile configurations, and Rheinmetall Weapon and Munitions (Switzerland) delivers the 35mm AHEAD air burst ammunition that gives the system its lethality against small, fast-moving aerial targets.

This cross-group collaboration is typical of Rheinmetall's larger air defence programmes and demonstrates the company's ability to marshal production capacity across European subsidiaries.

The Skynex System

Skynex is built around the Oerlikon Skymaster battle management system, which functions as the control node for a modular network of sensors and effectors. The system can integrate the Oerlikon Revolver Gun Mk3 and the Twin Gun GDF009 TREO, both firing 35mm AHEAD programmable ammunition. The AHEAD round releases a cloud of tungsten sub-projectiles in front of the target, achieving high probability of kill against small unmanned aerial systems and incoming rocket or mortar rounds.

Sensor options include the X-TAR3D tactical acquisition radar, with instrumented ranges of up to 50 km, and the Multi Sensor Unit with non-rotating AESA search radars covering 360 degrees. The open architecture means the customer can also integrate surface-to-air missiles, electronic warfare systems, and — in future — directed-energy weapons into the same command network.

The system is designed specifically for two mission profiles that have become urgent priorities for armed forces worldwide: Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS) and Counter-Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar (C-RAM). The proliferation of drones on modern battlefields, most recently demonstrated in Ukraine and the Middle East, has driven significant demand for cost-effective, gun-based VSHORAD solutions with low per-engagement costs compared to missile-based alternatives.

Market Significance

The contract is an important validation of Rheinmetall's strategic bet on gun-based point defence. While missile-based systems such as IRIS-T and NASAMS dominate the medium-range air defence segment, Skynex occupies a niche where volume of fire and low cost per kill are decisive. Each AHEAD round is substantially cheaper than a surface-to-air missile, making the system attractive for defending fixed installations, forward operating bases, and critical infrastructure against mass drone attacks.

The contract also strengthens Rheinmetall's position in the rapidly growing short-range air defence market, where several NATO and partner nations are accelerating procurement in response to evolving threat environments.
