Volvo CE begins world-first serial production of electric articulated haulers

Volvo Construction Equipment has started serial production of the A30 Electric and A40 Electric articulated haulers, becoming the first manufacturer to mass-produce battery-electric machines in this size class. The haulers are rolling off the line at Volvo CE's Braås facility in Sweden, where the company invented the articulated hauler segment with the legendary "Gravel Charlie" in 1966.

First unveiled at Bauma 2025, the A30 Electric (29-tonne payload / 23.3 cu yd heaped) and A40 Electric (39-tonne payload / 31 cu yd heaped) target quarry and mining operations under pressure to cut emissions while maintaining high utilisation. The A30 Electric packs a 245 kWh lithium-ion battery, while the A40 Electric runs on a 324 kWh pack — both drive a 350 kW (~470 hp) electric motor through a torque-amplifying gear reduction gearbox. CCS charging at up to 200 kW enables a 10–80 % top-up between shift changes. Volvo CE says the A30 Electric delivers up to six hours of operation on a single charge.

"Starting serial production of electric articulated haulers of this size is a proud moment for Volvo CE," said Melker Jernberg, President of Volvo CE. "It shows that our ambition to lead the transformation of our industry is backed by real execution. This milestone proves that electric solutions are ready to meet the demands of heavy, high-productivity applications."

Fredrik Tjernström, Electromobility Solutions Sales at Volvo CE, added: "There is a real sense of pride in seeing this move from ambition to reality — not just because we are first, but because we are delivering exactly as promised."

First customer deliveries are underway to sites in the UK and Norway, with additional deliveries to selected customers across Europe scheduled for the second half of 2026.
