Caterpillar and FieldAI join forces to put physical AI to work on heavy industry

Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) is collaborating with California-based robotics company FieldAI to advance physical AI, autonomy and robotics across construction jobsites, mines and manufacturing facilities, the companies announced on 2 September 2026.

The collaboration pairs Caterpillar's engineering expertise, operational data and century-long experience in building equipment for some of the world's toughest working environments with FieldAI's AI-enabled robot foundation models. Together, the two companies say, the aim is to make jobsites and factories safer and more efficient by turning real-time observations into actionable insights — improving decision-making, cutting risk and getting more value out of every machine and worker.

The agreement extends the "jobsite of the future" vision Caterpillar presented at CES in January 2026: a safer, more productive and easier-to-run operation built on intelligent machines, connected workflows and digital insights. Autonomy itself is not new ground for Caterpillar, which has deployed autonomous mining trucks for years and says its autonomous fleet has moved more than 11 billion tonnes of material and covered more than 380 million kilometers. The FieldAI tie-up is aimed at carrying that experience further into complex, dynamic industrial environments where traditional automation often falls short.

FieldAI, founded by CEO Ali Agha, builds what it calls Field Foundation Models: robot-agnostic autonomy software that can act as a "brain" across different robots and tasks, combining data-driven AI with physics-based reasoning and uncertainty awareness. The company says it has deployed systems across hundreds of sites worldwide and has raised more than USD 400 million from investors including Bezos Expeditions, Khosla Ventures, NVentures (NVIDIA's venture capital arm), Emerson Collective and Temasek. Its leadership team has roots in Google DeepMind, NASA JPL's Mars exploration program and DARPA's Subterranean Challenge and RACER programs.

The technical backbone of the collaboration is NVIDIA accelerated computing, NVIDIA Omniverse and high-fidelity digital twins built from operational data. These twins give site managers a continuously updated virtual view of equipment, infrastructure and operations, which Caterpillar says improves visibility, accelerates decision-making and supports the next generation of industrial operations. Early applications are expected to include autonomous inspections, improved situational awareness and operational optimization, with simulation used to test changes before machines and people are committed on site.

For customers, the productivity case is straightforward. Physical AI is positioned to take over repetitive or hazardous inspection work, keep a constant digital eye on site conditions and feed operators recommendations based on live data — freeing skilled crews for higher-value tasks at a time when the industry faces persistent labor shortages. Caterpillar is also applying the technology inside its own plants: John Tuntland, senior vice president of the Integrated Components Division, says it gives manufacturing teams greater visibility into how facilities operate, helping them improve safety, optimize flow and make more informed decisions.

"Collaborations like this help accelerate the journey. We're focused on applying AI where it matters most, helping customers improve safety, increase productivity and get more value from every operation."

Agha framed the agreement as a meeting of physical AI and heavy-industry scale. "Caterpillar has shaped operations on jobsites and manufacturing facilities for over a century, and these are exactly the environments FieldAI excels in, with deployments spanning hundreds of sites worldwide," he said. "Together, we are shaping the next century of AI-enabled heavy industry."
