Caterpillar reported record second-quarter 2026 results Tuesday, posting sales and revenues of $20.5 billion — the first time in the company's history that it has generated more than $20 billion in a single quarter.

Revenue rose 24% year over year from $16.6 billion in Q2 2025, accelerating from the 22% growth recorded in Q1, when sales reached $17.4 billion. Profit per share came in at $7.77, up from $4.62 a year earlier and well above the $6.25 analysts had expected. Adjusted profit per share was $8.17.

"This is the first time in company history that we have generated over $20 billion in sales and revenues in a single quarter," Chairman and CEO Joe Creed said in the release. "Strong order rates and a growing backlog reflect broadening momentum across all three of our primary segments."

Data-center demand was a key driver. Power & Energy sales rose 17% to $8.2 billion, with growth in large reciprocating engines and turbines "primarily in data center applications." Construction Industries climbed 35% to $8.3 billion, and Resource Industries grew 20% to $4.6 billion.

The company lifted its full-year 2026 sales growth target to low double digits, citing strength across end markets. Backlog remains at record levels of roughly $63 billion.

Cat Financial also reported a strong quarter: profit before taxes rose 13% to $206 million, and retail new business volume grew 9% to $3.92 billion.

Operating profit margin widened to 20.9% from 17.3% a year ago. Caterpillar returned $2.2 billion to shareholders through $1.5 billion in buybacks and $0.7 billion in dividends.
