DAF and Einride Partner to Put Level 4 Autonomy in Electric Heavy Trucks

DAF Trucks and Swedish autonomous freight technology company Einride have announced a joint initiative to integrate Einride's Level 4 autonomous driving system, Einride Driver, into DAF's electric truck platform. Announced August 12, the partnership targets large-scale commercialization of SAE Level 4 autonomous electric freight, in response to driver shortages and rising operating costs across the logistics industry.

The collaboration combines Einride's vehicle-agnostic autonomy stack with DAF's premium electric range — the XD and XF Electric, jointly voted International Truck of the Year 2026, along with the related XG and XG+ Electric long-haul models. DAF's complete electric series spans from the 12-tonne XB Electric for city distribution to the XG and XG+ Electric for longer-haul applications.

Integration work with TNO

As a first step, Einride and DAF will work with TNO, the Dutch independent research institute for applied science and innovation, to define and test the integration of Einride Driver within DAF's electric truck platform. This includes establishing the interfaces required for safe and scalable autonomous operations.

With TNO's assistance, the partners are also working closely with type approval authorities to ensure the platform is compliant for future expansion onto public roads. Initial tests and validation of key interfaces are scheduled for 2026, followed in 2027 by the integration and commissioning of Einride's autonomous driving software, with subsequent interface validation and functional testing performed on a DAF truck.

Building on PACCAR's autonomous trucking program

The initiative builds on PACCAR's automated driving activities — DAF's parent company has gained significant experience through its North American Autonomous Vehicle Platform (AVP) program. PACCAR has also collaborated with full-stack autonomy providers Aurora and Kodiak in the past, and the company says insights from these programs will help accelerate autonomous capabilities within the DAF platform.

"By leveraging DAF's decades of manufacturing excellence and market strength, we can expedite the global scale-up of Einride's autonomous technology," said Henrik Green, Chief Technology Officer at Einride. "This collaboration validates our vehicle-agnostic approach to autonomy and brings us one step closer to deploying safe, scalable Level 4 autonomy at commercial scale."

Level 4, explained

Level 4 refers to a high level of driving automation in which the vehicle can independently perform repetitive driving tasks under predefined conditions, without any need for human intervention. In practice, that means available drivers can focus on logistics activities where their expertise and judgement add the most value — rather than the physical act of driving.

Einride has already deployed L4 autonomous trucks on public roads in Europe, claiming a first at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium, and has expanded operations on private roads in Ohio in the United States. The company, founded in Stockholm in 2016, went public via SPAC merger in June 2026 and operates through a dual business model: Freight-Capacity-as-a-Service (FCaaS) and a software-as-a-service platform.

What it means for fleets

For fleet managers, the partnership signals a concrete path toward autonomy on European-built electric trucks. The timeline is deliberately measured — interface validation in 2026, software integration in 2027 — and the involvement of TNO and type approval authorities indicates that regulatory compliance, not just technology, is being treated as a first-order requirement.

For DAF, the deal adds a European L4 operator with an electric focus to an autonomy portfolio that already includes the AVP program and work with North American providers. For Einride, it brings manufacturing scale and market access through one of Europe's largest truck brands.

The result is one of the clearest signs yet that autonomous electric freight is moving from pilot demonstrations toward a production-integrated product — with the XD/XF Electric platform as the test bed.
