
First XM30 Wolf Prototype Reaches the U.S. Army Ahead of Fort Hood Field Trials
General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) has delivered the first XM30 Wolf infantry fighting vehicle prototype to the U.S. Army, moving the Mechanized Infantry Combat Vehicle (MICV) program — estimated at about $45 billion — a step closer to replacing the M2 and M3 Bradley family that has been in service for more than 40 years. The delivery was disclosed on 28 August by retired Brig. Gen. Geoffrey Norman, a former systems integration director at Army Futures Command who now works for GDLS. Defence Blog reported that the handover took place at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, and that further prototypes will follow at Fort Hood, Texas, where soldiers from the 1st Cavalry Division will begin evaluation.
Norman, who spent 30 years in the Army as a tanker and cavalryman and helped shape the requirements for both the XM30 and the M1E3 Abrams upgrade, did not say whether GDLS had delivered all seven planned prototypes or only part of the initial group. The Army could receive as many as 11 GDLS prototypes if it exercises an available option. Norman confirmed the first vehicle is one of several: "The work continues as this first vehicle gets into the Army's hands," he wrote. "Every day and night, GDLS is working to complete all our prototypes and deliver on time."
The trials will examine the manufacturer's claims on vehicle performance and functionality while assessing prototype reliability. Findings could lead the Army to request design changes before the XM30 enters production. Soldiers from the 1st Cavalry Division will test the vehicles alongside personnel from other Army organizations — the same division expected to run trials of the M1E3 main battle tank. A photograph published with Norman's statement appeared to show the prototype fitted with composite tracks and extensive add-on armor.
The XM30 is one of two competing designs under the MICV program. GDLS heads a team that includes GM Defense, Applied Intuition, AeroVironment and General Dynamics Mission Systems, while American Rheinmetall Defense leads a rival group with Textron Systems, RTX, L3Harris Technologies, Allison Transmission and Anduril. Both teams are required to develop hybrid-powered infantry fighting vehicles built around a remotely operated turret — a requirement that ties the program to the wider push toward hybrid-electric drivelines in heavy military vehicles.
The Wolf is expected to carry an XM913 50 mm cannon paired with a 7.62 mm machine gun and an anti-tank guided missile launcher. Its fire-control system is intended to combine third-generation thermal imaging with artificial intelligence support, and the requirements call for modern armor and active protection systems to protect the crew and dismounted infantry. GDLS describes the design as "born-digital" and purpose-built for upgrades, with a Modular Open Systems Architecture intended to allow new software and technology to be integrated through regular field updates.
The program is also a manufacturing story. Norman credited GDLS teams at Sterling Heights, Lima, Scranton, Tallahassee, Grand Rapids and London, and said the prototypes built in Michigan are on track toward a full-rate production decision. The U.S. Army has described the XM30 as "a transformational increase in warfighting capability" and "not simply another incremental improvement over the Bradley Fighting Vehicle." With both competitors developing and testing prototypes in Michigan and a winning design expected to be selected in 2027, the field trials at Fort Hood will help determine which industry team gets to build the future of U.S. mechanized infantry.
