Hitachi Construction Machinery and Pronto partner on open mine automation

Tokyo / San Francisco — July 16, 2026 — Hitachi Construction Machinery and Pronto, the OEM-agnostic Autonomous Haulage Systems (AHS) specialist, have signed a memorandum of understanding for a strategic partnership aimed at delivering open automation solutions to the global mining industry.

The partnership combines Hitachi's decades of mining equipment expertise and global customer base with Pronto's proven autonomous technology. Pronto, headquartered in San Francisco and operating as part of Travis Kalanick's Atoms, is the market leader in OEM-agnostic AHS. Its tiered system retrofits onto existing haul trucks from any manufacturer and scales from regional quarries to ultra-class deep-pit operations, with commercial deployments across North America, South America and EMEA.

Mining companies are increasingly demanding open automation platforms that can be deployed flexibly across mixed fleets without creating dependence on a single vendor ecosystem. Both companies see this partnership as a direct response to that shift.

Masafumi Senzaki, President and Executive Officer of Hitachi Construction Machinery, said the collaboration represents an important step in realizing the open co-creation vision embodied in the company's planned rebranding to LANDCROS from April 2027.

Pronto's existing deployments include a mixed fleet of Caterpillar and Komatsu haul trucks at Heidelberg Materials' Lake Bridgeport quarry in Texas, a new subsidiary in Brazil (Prontobras) operating on Bell articulated dump trucks, and an ongoing deployment at a mine site in Saudi Arabia. The partnership with Hitachi is non-exclusive — Pronto already has a separate North American autonomy agreement with Komatsu for quarry-class trucks.

Hitachi Construction Machinery also operates its own AHS, which has accumulated over 144,000 operating hours with zero safety incidents, moving more than 58 million tonnes at sites including Whitehaven Coal's Maules Creek mine in Australia. The company intends to continue offering its OEM-led AHS alongside the new partnership solutions.
