JCB Hydromax Sets 406 mph Hydrogen Land Speed Record at Bonneville

The JCB Hydromax has delivered the result its engineers set out to prove: a world land speed record of 406.320 mph (653.91 km/h) for hydrogen-powered vehicles, set on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah on 11-12 August 2026 — and the strongest evidence yet that hydrogen combustion can survive the most extreme duty a machine will ever face.

Driven by RAF Wing Commander Andy Green, the 32-foot streamliner covered the measured mile at 400.623 mph (644.74 km/h) in one direction, then returned through it at 412.135 mph (663.27 km/h) for a two-way average of 406.320 mph. The FIA, motorsport's global governing body, officiated the attempt and confirmed the record.

The number matters well beyond the salt. Hydromax more than doubled the previous hydrogen internal-combustion record — the 185.5 mph set by BMW's H2R in 2004 — and also beat the fastest hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle (303 mph, Venturi Buckeye Bullet 2, 2009) and the fastest electric car ever timed (341 mph, VBB3, 2016). It is now the fastest zero-emission vehicle of any kind over a measured mile, standing only behind the nitromethane-fuelled Challenger II (449 mph, 2018) and ThrustSSC's outright 763 mph mark — the latter also set by Green.

Heavy-Shift previewed the attempt in June in "From Diggers to 350 mph: Why JCB Is Taking Hydrogen to Bonneville". The intent then was to stress-test production-based hydrogen engines the way Dieselmax stress-tested diesels twenty years ago. The result confirms the approach.

Production Engines, Racing Speeds

Under the shell sit two of JCB's own hydrogen internal combustion engines — the same architecture the company builds for excavators, backhoe loaders and telehandlers. Ricardo boosted them from their production 74 hp (55 kW) each to roughly 800 hp, doubling engine speed to 3,800 rpm, converting to double overhead camshafts and direct injection, and adding heavy-duty cooling. Combined output: 1,600 hp (1,193 kW) and 2,600 lb-ft (3,525 Nm) of torque, driving all four wheels.

Prodrive built and ran the car, Xtrac supplied the six-speed gearbox, and the clutches came straight off a JCB backhoe loader — the only units, the team says, that could handle the torque. A full record run consumed just over 2 kg of hydrogen and produced about 18 liters of water.

Green, who also holds the outright land speed record of 763.035 mph from ThrustSSC in 1997 and piloted Dieselmax to 350.092 mph in 2006, called the car "terrific — stable, strong, and fast," and the record "a huge achievement by a world-class team and superb technology."

What It Means for Heavy Industry

JCB chairman Anthony Bamford, who led the hydrogen project, framed the run in industrial terms: "Twenty years ago we came to Bonneville with JCB Dieselmax and showed what British engineering could do with diesel power. Today we have done it again, this time with engines powered by hydrogen. It shows hydrogen works, and it works today at the highest level with zero emissions."

That is the point for construction. JCB has invested around £100 million over five years in hydrogen combustion, betting that batteries fit compact machines while excavators, wheel loaders and telehandlers need the fast refueling, power density and robustness of an internal-combustion package running on zero-carbon fuel. A machine that just held 400+ mph on salt — on engines derived from production units — is the strongest possible argument that the technology belongs on a jobsite as well as on a race track.
