Komatsu and AIM Intelligent Machines Enter Autonomous Construction Partnership

Komatsu Ltd and its subsidiary EARTHBRAIN Ltd have entered a strategic partnership with AIM Intelligent Machines for the autonomous operation of bulldozers and hydraulic excavators. The collaboration targets the Japanese and US markets and has already progressed into the commercial deployment phase in the US.

AIM Intelligent Machines develops autonomous operation technology for bulldozers and hydraulic excavators. The company has already commercially deployed autonomous fleets of both machine types, and the three companies — Komatsu, EARTHBRAIN and AIM — have been jointly advancing technology validation as the collaboration moves toward wider deployment.

Commercial deployment is already under way in the US, the market where the partnership has progressed furthest, with AIM's autonomous dozer and excavator fleets operating on sites. The collaboration is also targeting the Japanese market, with commercial deployment planned there from 2027.

The partnership addresses construction labor shortages, safety and productivity — challenges that are intensifying as the construction industry faces growing infrastructure demand. Autonomous machines are being positioned as a response to a tightening supply of experienced operators, allowing contractors to sustain production while improving jobsite safety.

Autonomy in earthmoving is moving from pilot projects toward commercial adoption in construction, and the Komatsu–EARTHBRAIN–AIM partnership puts one of the world's largest equipment makers behind that shift in two key markets.
