Komatsu and its EARTHBRAIN subsidiary have brought AIM Intelligent Machines into a strategic partnership that moves autonomous dozers and excavators out of the pilot phase — and signals where the real value in construction equipment is heading.

Komatsu Ltd., its digital-construction subsidiary EARTHBRAIN, and AIM Intelligent Machines (AIM) announced on 31 July 2026 that they will jointly deliver autonomous operation for bulldozers and hydraulic excavators in the U.S. and Japanese markets. The collaboration has already passed technology validation: Komatsu machines running AIM's platform are operating at customer jobsites in the United States today, with a Japanese launch planned from 2027.

The solution pairs EARTHBRAIN's Smart Construction platform — which connects planning, machine guidance, site management and remote operation — with AIM's "physical AI" stack. A dozer or excavator reads the construction plan and target terrain data, then determines its own working method and travel route and executes the earthmoving task without an operator in the cab. Everything from planning to autonomous execution, progress visualization and performance data runs through a single digital workflow.

Equally important for contractors: AIM's technology can be retrofitted to existing machines regardless of make, model or age. That means autonomy no longer waits on a capital replacement cycle — a fleet owner can introduce it gradually across mixed fleets.

The harder problem in autonomy

Autonomous haulage has been a solved problem for years. Komatsu's FrontRunner system put the first commercial autonomous haul trucks into mines in 2008, and in April 2026 the company became the first manufacturer to commission a thousand ultra-class driverless trucks, which have collectively moved more than 11.5 billion tonnes of material.

Earthmoving on a live construction site is a different challenge. Terrain changes by the hour, no two tasks repeat, and machines work alongside people and other plant. That unstructured environment demands continuous perception and judgement — closer to the self-driving-car problem than to hauling ore along a fixed route. It is why Komatsu chose to buy, rather than build: AIM's CEO Adam Sadilek spent years at Waymo and Google before founding the Seattle-based startup in 2021.

"By combining AIM's physical AI platform with Komatsu's ecosystem, construction machines can autonomously perform earthmoving tasks at the jobsite," Sadilek said. Chikashi Shike, president of Komatsu's Solution Division, framed the deal as completing the loop from planning to execution: "We will integrate Smart Construction with AIM's technology to create a seamless connection from construction planning and management to autonomous execution."

Two roads to the autonomous jobsite

The partnership throws Komatsu's strategy into sharp relief against its principal rival. Caterpillar has kept its autonomy stack close, staging a major push at CES 2026 and CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2026 with intelligent excavators and loaders, a Cat AI Assistant and an expanded NVIDIA collaboration — vertical integration built on decades of mining automation heritage.

Komatsu has taken the partner-and-integrate route, running a portfolio of alliances: AIM for earthmoving, and TIER IV for autonomous articulated and rigid dump trucks aimed at Japanese quarry and civil work by fiscal 2027. Both manufacturers have reached the same conclusion — the competitive battleground has moved off the iron and onto the intelligence layer that directs it.

That is also how Komatsu is absorbing the retrofit wave. Venture-backed challengers including Bedrock Robotics (over $350 million raised), Built Robotics and Gravis Robotics have been selling brand-agnostic autonomy kits directly to contractors — a potential disintermediation threat. By embedding AIM's retrofit-capable platform in Smart Construction, Komatsu turns that threat into a channel that runs through its own digital ecosystem.

Labour math drives adoption

The economics are underpinned by a structural operator shortage. Associated Builders and Contractors estimates the U.S. construction industry needs roughly 349,000 net new workers in 2026 alone. AIM says each autonomous machine can generate around $1 million a year in additional value, largely by lifting utilization of machines that sit idle for lack of operators — and its commercial model takes a share of that created value rather than selling a box outright.

The result is a recurring, outcome-linked revenue structure that construction equipment has rarely supported. Komatsu already understands the model at scale: FrontRunner generated about $2.4 billion in assessed social impact in 2024. With autonomous earthmoving now crossing from pilot to procurement, the next phase of competition in heavy equipment will be fought over software, autonomy performance and recurring revenue — and this partnership puts one of the industry's biggest manufacturers squarely in that fight.
