
Liebherr Thinks Big with New G8 Compact Excavators — Three Models Now Available
Liebherr has officially launched its Generation 8 compact excavator lineup, bringing three new models into the 15-to-20-tonne class. The R 915 Compact G8, R 917 Compact G8, and R 920 Compact G8 crawler excavators first appeared at bauma and are now rolling out to customers, targeting the growing demand for versatile, urban-capable machines in a segment that has seen steady growth as construction shifts toward denser city environments.
Developed and manufactured at Liebherr-France SAS in Colmar, the new G8 range expands the manufacturer's compact excavator portfolio significantly. The R 917 Compact G8 is an entirely new model for Liebherr, slotting between the existing R 915 and R 920 with a 136-hp power output, while the R 915 delivers 122 hp and the R 920 tops the range at 150 hp. All three run on conventional diesel powertrains, consistent with Liebherr's position that the compact segment will remain primarily diesel-powered for the foreseeable future while the company focuses electrification efforts on smaller machines and wheel loaders.
What the G8 generation brings
The three models share a common architecture built around Liebherr's new emCAB operator cab, featuring the INTUSI (Intuitive User Interface) concept. INTUSI enables customizable operation with quick access to critical machine functions through an ergonomic layout that puts controls, displays, and joysticks within natural reach. The cab is equipped with high-precision electric joysticks designed for smooth, accurate control — particularly valuable in lifting work and precision grading where hydraulic-only systems can feel laggy or imprecise.
A standout feature across the range is the reduced tail swing radius. The R 917 Compact G8 offers a 1.7-metre tail swing, making it viable for confined urban sites and road construction where space is at a premium. Weighing between 16,280 and 18,430 kg depending on configuration, the R 917 is positioned for demanding lifting work and pipeline construction — applications where its combination of reach, stability, and compact geometry pays off directly.
Engineered for the urban jobsite
Liebherr has optimized engine and hydraulic performance across the board to deliver fast cycle times, high digging forces, and strong tractive effort. Improved bucket kinematics reduce the need to reposition the machine, cutting cycle waste and improving precision during excavating and grading passes.
The compact excavators are designed for multi-function use with a wide choice of attachments and hydraulic tools, allowing a single machine to handle earthmoving, utility installation, and material handling across different phases of a project. On the digital side, the G8 compact excavators connect to Liebherr's MyLiebherr Maintenance and Performance platform. Fleet managers can monitor machine performance in real time, schedule preventive maintenance, and optimize operations through data-driven decisions. The machines feature an open architecture designed to accommodate future assistance systems and digital innovations as they become available — a forward-looking approach that lets buyers future-proof their fleet investment.
Market positioning
The compact excavator segment is among the most hotly contested in construction equipment, with Caterpillar, Komatsu, Volvo CE, and JCB all fielding strong offerings in the 15-to-20-tonne bracket. Urbanization trends and the increasing density of construction in city environments are driving demand for machines that combine compact footprints with full-size digging and lifting performance.
Liebherr's G8 range directly addresses this shift.
