Scania pushes electric long-haul range to 720 km with batteries behind the cab
Scania has announced a battery-electric long-haul solution with up to 720 kilometres of range, up from the 560 km the manufacturer currently lists as the maximum for its battery-electric truck range. The announcement was made on the opening press day of IAA Transportation 2026 in Hanover on 14 September.
The extra range comes from where the batteries sit. In a typical configuration, two MP20 battery packs are mounted behind the cab, adding approximately 356 kWh of installed capacity on top of the batteries carried on the chassis and under the cab. Together with MCS (Megawatt Charging System) charging, Scania says the expanded capacity is enough to support electric long-haul tractor configurations using standard European trailer combinations.
The layout is designed to work with Scania's protruding IVD (Increased Vehicle Dimension) front, which allows a 6x2*4 tractor combination to keep maximum range even when total vehicle length exceeds 16.5 metres. According to Scania, the new front also reduces energy consumption by up to 3 percent, depending on specification and operation — wind resistance accounts for a larger share of total energy use in an electric truck.
"Electric trucks are already part of the transport system, but long-haul operations place very different demands on range, payload and charging," says Lars Gustafsson, Senior Vice President, Head of Solutions Management at Scania. "With this solution, Scania is showing how those pieces can come together in a practical way for customers who want to electrify demanding long-distance routes."
Scania stresses that all range and consumption figures depend on configuration and operating conditions. The company frames the behind-cab packs as a way to balance range and payload rather than to maximise range alone, since added battery capacity also means added weight.
Scania delivered 87,600 trucks in 2025 and is part of the TRATON Group. IAA Transportation 2026 runs in Hanover from 15 to 20 September, with 14 September reserved for accredited press.
