
TerraFirma Raises $115M to Bring Semi-Autonomous Construction Equipment to the Masses
TerraFirma, an Austin-based construction robotics company founded by former SpaceX engineers, has raised approximately $115 million — including a $100 million Series A led by Kleiner Perkins — to scale its semi-autonomous heavy equipment platform. The company is already deploying retrofitted excavators, dozers, and loaders on real construction sites across Texas.
Founded in 2024 by Noah Schochet (CEO) and Noah McGuinness (CTO), TerraFirma is building what it calls the "robotic infrastructure stack" for modern construction. Both founders met on the first day of engineering class at Princeton University, then went on to work on Starlink, Starshield, and Starship at SpaceX before leaving to apply that pace of innovation to an industry that has been left behind.
"Construction is the foundation everything else is built on, and it's been going backward for fifty years," Schochet told CNBC. "There's no first-principles reason construction can't become 10x faster, cheaper, and safer."
A Platform, Not Just a Machine
Rather than building machines from scratch, TerraFirma retrofits conventional heavy equipment — excavators, dozers, loaders, rollers, and skid steers — for remote, semi-autonomous operation. The platform combines three layers:
- Mission Planner: AI-enabled pre-construction software for project bidding, planning, simulation, and execution.
- Mission Control: A remote command-and-control center where operators oversee multiple machines simultaneously.
- Accelerated Operations: Retrofitted machinery that can be operated remotely by small, highly efficient crews using interfaces that include an Xbox controller.
The approach is explicitly human-in-the-loop. "It is not about trying to fully automate construction equipment," McGuinness said. "Making construction truly faster and cheaper requires innovating on operations and technology together across the full stack."
TerraFirma claims its technology can make operators up to 300% more productive by allowing them to orchestrate multiple machines remotely instead of sitting in one cab all shift.
Real Projects, Real Traction
The company is not just pitching a concept. TerraFirma has already completed commercial deployments across housing, energy, transportation, manufacturing, and education sectors in Texas. Recent projects include:
- Site preparation and grading for a Starbucks in North Austin
- A sports arena in Spicewood, Texas
- A power substation in New Braunfels, Texas
TerraFirma is also working with the U.S. government on mission-critical international infrastructure and logistics projects, though details remain classified.
Why Now?
The construction productivity crisis is well documented. U.S. construction labor productivity has fallen roughly 0.6% per year since 1965, while the overall economy has seen steady gains. According to TerraFirma, this productivity collapse has cost the equivalent of roughly $1 trillion every five years — a price paid in delayed housing, deferred infrastructure, and strained workforces.
Meanwhile, SpaceX's historic $86 billion IPO in June 2026 and NASA's push to establish a lunar base has sparked fresh investor enthusiasm for space-adjacent technologies. The funding round also included participation from Bain Capital Ventures, Glade Brook Capital Partners, BANNER VC, Saga Ventures, Trust Ventures, Definition, PEAK6, Magnetar Capital, Ravelin Capital, and angel investors from SpaceX, Anduril, Base Power, Shinkei, and Hadrian.
Kleiner Perkins Partner Josh Coyne said: "TerraFirma is succeeding at real-world scale, proving the business model works, and securing government and commercial contracts. This is clearly where the industry is headed."
The Mars Connection
TerraFirma's long-term vision extends beyond Earth. The company's website describes its goal as becoming "the largest construction company in the solar system," arguing that the same technologies needed to re-industrialize America — autonomous earthmoving, remote operations, AI-enabled planning — will be required to build infrastructure on the Moon and Mars.
"The technology that we are building today to solve critical challenges here on Earth will be highly reusable to solve those same challenges on the Moon and Mars," Schochet said.
With the new capital, TerraFirma plans to hire 300 employees over the next year and build a Texas factory and a mission control center. The company is currently running about 25 employees, with roughly half of its engineering team coming from SpaceX, Tesla, and the Boring Company.
